André Dufresne's first publication of his ancestors was the French language book, De Rivard a Dufresne, une histoire de famille that was
published in 2002. Jim Rivard translated three chapters, the first three generations, into English. André Dufresne published this English version
in 2005 under the title of
Nicolas Rivard Sieur de la Vigne, Captain of Militia.

This book, also translated into English by Jim Rivard, continues the Rivard dit Dufresne line for the next three generations, incorporating Joseph, his son Augustin, a member of the first Quebec House of Assembly, and
Augustin’s son, Joseph, the great-great-grandson of Nicolas Rivard. Their story is one that goes from the plough to the church to the first parliament of Québec and back to the plough, from the standing of the French Canadians in 1766 shortly after the Paris Treaty to their standing at the beginning of modern Canada. It was at this time that England decided to appease the French habitants by an act in 1791 that separated the Québec Province into Upper and Lower Canada. Augustin’s election to the first House of Assembly in Lower Canada is an event that reflects the involvement of the Rivard line!
